Starting this Wednesday, March 19th and running through the rest of the week and weekend, Eye of the Day will be exhibiting fine terra cotta garden pottery and Fermob outdoor furniture in a booth at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show at the San Mateo Event Center.

The fun starts at the entry, where Eye of the Day’s authentic European pieces will be incorporated into the display garden that lines the path leading into the main exhibit hall. Designed by the show’s director Chris Woods. A native of England and now a U.S. citizen, Woods has worked in the garden world as a director and designer for over thirty years. He started his career at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, where he was trained as a horticulturist.

After moving to the United States and occupying several prestigious positions in the garden world, he was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to design the central feature for the Philadelphia International Flower Show 2013. The SFFGS is pleased to have him on board, and the entry gardens–complete with Eye of the Day’s beautiful containers–are sure to be spectacular.

Brent Freitas, President of Eye of the Day, was recently sought out by for his expertise on garden containers. Interviewed for a story that is now live on the NHS website, Brent provided helpful information on the subject of extending the season by adding heat elements in the garden.

In an effort to make their gardens more distinct and more beautiful, many homeowners incorporate garden containers for use as fire pits–but this can prove both costly and dangerous if the wrong techniques are used.

As Brent says: “Customers often ask for pots or containers to use in their backyards for fire pits. They want something attractive and different from the average offering. They want to know if our concrete or terra cotta will stand up to the heat, and this is what I tell them: if you want to burn wood, no. But if you are going to install gas and use a flame delivery system that is properly install so the flame is diffused upwards through the rock or tumbled glass, well then, yes.”

When the Stanford Shopping Center invited Eye of the Day to open a month-long pop up store to be located in their Main Pavilion, we knew immediately that it was a great idea.  All of our expectations were met and exceeded as trade and retail customers from Palo Alto, Menlo Park and beyond visited the temporary store and attended programs with guest speakers Rebecca Sweet, author of Garden Up! Smart Vertical Gardening for Small and Large Products, Stefani Bittner of Star Apple Gardens and co-author of The Beautiful Edible Garden, and Julie Chai, former Sunset Magazine Senior Garden Editor.

The most exciting and popular products from the flagship Santa Barbara store were available for customers to become acquainted with our signature high quality.  Among the highlights were pieces from Gladding McBean, located in Lincoln, California, finished in their lustrous, bright glazes.  New Eye of the Day customers had their beautiful oil jars delivered by Brent and then ordered more.  The Greek terracotta was especially in demand for its characteristic rustic look and excellent price point, and French Anduze pots in a variety of colors and finishes were met with excitement and purchased to take home or be delivered.

Because of our recent partnership with the Stanford Shopping Center, Woodside Hotel Group has become a great new customer with merchandise already delivered to the Napa Valley Lodge and soon to be delivered to the Lafayette Park Hotel. “We are thrilled to have had the privilege of working with Eye of the Day,” explains Julie Kelly, Director of Marketing and Business Development for Stanford Shopping Center. “Their merchandise was a beautiful compliment to the property’s existing flowers and foliage, and our shoppers loved it.”

Not only is Eye of the Day bringing its show to the Stanford Shopping Center with its signature collection of pottery and garden ornaments from around the world, but we have invited a number of speakers for each weekend from June 14 to July 14.   On Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14 our guest will be Rebecca Sweet, from Northern California’s Harmony In The Garden.  She is a garden designer, author, speaker and a lifelong gardener who is passionate about design, plants and beautiful spaces.  Rebecca’s signature “California Fusion” style blends the personal desires of her clients with regionally appropriate plants and California natives, resulting in gardens that are layered, lush and environmentally friendly.
