Gardens are not made by singing “Oh, how beautiful,” and sitting in the shade. – Rudyard Kipling

chairs_03 tables_02 Eye of the Day has something new.  French, but not Anduze pottery.  Beautiful colors, but not Gladding McBean containers.  Great for the outdoor lifestyle, but having nothing to do with fountains.  We just received shipment of French bistro tables, chairs and benches to add to our already expansive collection of garden pottery and garden accessories from France, Italy, Greece and the U.S.

Folding outdoor furniture was developed at the end of the nineteenth century and was popular among sidewalk lemonade sellers of the day because it was easy to pick up and pack away, allowing the peripatetic merchants to avoid paying a license for a permanent address.

The bistro, or “Simplex” chair was patented in1889 by Eduouard Lecler.  The infamous Montmartre artist district in Paris has contributed immensely to this chair’s  Parisian mark on  French garden and outdoor furniture: oh, the Parisian painter, his easel and canvas, baguette and wine,  and that chair.    And its typically French style has won fans in Times Square and Bryant Park in New York City, too.

Eye of the Day is going French for your patio as well as your garden.  Not only do we have bistro tables in four sizes to go along with the classic chair, but also some small people sets and matching benches for your patio, you provide the escargot.  The colors are astounding: Chili, Verbena, Poppy Red, Fjord Blue, Paprika, Plum, Lemon, Willow Green.  Definitely something for everyone.  We are excited to have the French tables and chairs arrive in time to accompany us to our first pop-up store at the Stanford Shopping Center June 14 – July 14,  so if you can’t make it to Carpinteria to see them, catch up with Eye of the Day in Palo Alto.tables_04chairs

Not Just Another Pretty Place

What makes Eye of the Day different, what sets us apart? Here’s what WE think:
We focus strictly on site ornamentation, particularly pottery and containers, fountains, and statuary.  We DO sell plants somewhat as an afterthought to enhance the inherent beauty and functionality of our terracotta, concrete and glazed pots.  Occasionally,  a garden designer or retail customer wants a ready-to-go potted plant they have fallen for.  Our strength and forte is our selection and large inventory of high quality European and American pottery and containers made of terra cotta, concrete, stone, wood citrus planters, Versailles planters and custom made and custom finished planters.
Eye of the Day has provided custom finishes in almost every color imaginable to containers, fountains and statues.  When a client’s budget doesn’t allow for a hand carved Italian or French stone fountain, our service department, using our proprietary methods, will overlay manufactured pieces to emulate French limestone.  From a simple concrete pot to a detailed Italianate vaso, we can tweak an item to fit perfectly into your garden plans.

The Beauty Within

There is a small oasis within the oasis of Eye of the Day.  Across the driveway from our main building in Carpinteria is our “Annex”.  The Annex has been home to small, designed gardens, Italian terracotta overstock, American concrete pots and fountains, an English gazebo, a curious 17th century stone church façade once belonging to William Randolph Hearst, well, you get the idea…

During the last few months there has been a lot of activity on our Annex.  Scott Taylor of Green Care/Land Dynamics, a landscape contractor and client of Eye of the Day has designed and constructed a 2500 square foot permanent patio/plaza using materials supplied by Thompson Building Supply of Camarillo.  Antique Greek terracotta vessels are now nestled among the Doric columns and the two levels provide a perfect display area for fountains, Italian terracotta planted with manicured topiaries  and an Italian terracotta table and bench set.  The plaza itself is designed from natural stone and multi-colored manufactured paving stones and features a central, circular design.

We will be updating and changing the display throughout the year.  It makes a perfect place for sitting and contemplating the universe that is Eye of the Day.

Your Garden Dream

Taking a leisurely stroll through Eye of the Day can set the imagination on fire.  We see our customers taking that stroll every day.  The dreamy look in their eyes, the contemplative slow-walk they do through the terracotta low bowls, trying to decide what to plant in them, the recognition that the blue of that French  Anduze vase would be so complimentary to the trim on their home.

Two dynamic designers, both long-time customers of Eye of the Day have transformed an area of our Annex into four distinct garden rooms, allowing  imagination to travel into reality.  Jennifer Voss of Gardefacts Landscape Design and Arianna Jansma of Dramatically Different Landscape Design, with skill and creativity,  have combined beautiful Eye of the Day merchandise with perfectly complimentary plant material to produce a Fantasyland of gardens. The use of lead planters from Belgium, terracotta from Italy, a hand carved French stone table and an antique stone millstone all make imaginative statements in a garden setting.

Whether you are a garden professional or you just want to create your own garden Fantasyland, Eye of the Day will give wings to your dreams.
