The Biot or The French Oil Jar

NEW OLDThe “biot” is a name and style of pottery which has been used since the 16th century.  It is also an area in Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur near Cannes in the south of France.  The shape of the French Pot makes it special, with the rim glazed and often dripping down its sides.  Biot is known for its antique terracotta pots which can be seen along the French Cote d’Azur into the adjacent Italian area, Liguria.  Eye of the Day has received some wonderful pieces of this style of French pottery.  In addition, we have authentic reproductions from our factory in Anduze, France.  We have various sizes of this wonderful pottery… come in to our showroom and take a look.

Santa Lives at Eye of the Day

In the basement of a farmhouse  in the south of France were locked away a number of hand carved wooden papier mache molds that had been there since the mid-1900s.  On an early trip searching for unique garden ornaments for Eye of the Day we received word that there was a cache of these just waiting for the perfect moment to be discovered.  Brent and Daisy took a little side trip to see what they might see and when they entered the musty basement of the old farmhouse, the golden light of day revealed not only papier mache molds, but Christmas.  There were large, carved ornaments, a small santa sitting on a star, decorated balls, and off to the side, a 7 foot Pere Noel.  When you enter the double glass doors to Eye of the Day Carpinteria, he will greet you, hands on belly, seemingly ready for a welcoming Ho Ho Ho.  This sturdy Santa statue has become one of our oldest and most beloved treasures.  Though we know that its possible we are not his final home, Santa will always have a special place in our hearts and at Eye of the Day.

Our Version of Versailles: the Redwood Planter Box

Eye of the Day’s talented Service Department is becoming proficient in producing our beautiful, popular redwood planter boxes.  Not only is this product available in a variety of sizes, with or without a galvanized metal insert, but the choice of colors is endless.  We use a high quality, oil-base enamel paint made in Holland, producing an extremely strong, smooth surface.  Wooden planter boxes are most often fashioned after the French Versailles citrus planter and are versatile enough for any landscape design.  The images of the planter box on our website have drawn customers throughout the United States.  We have shipped them to New York, Maryland, Florida and distant parts of California.  These redwood planters are special order items and can typically be ready for shipping in 2-3 weeks of ordering.

French Cavalry Antique Stone Troughs Installed

Eye of the Day is known for the unparalleled variety of merchandise shown on our extensive website and in our Santa Barbara showroom. Italian terracotta pottery, iconic French Anduze vases, Greek terracotta pottery and Pithari amphoras abound. We are also (temporary) home to many old and antique garden items: old Spanish terracotta pots, antique Greek  oil jars and stone terracotta, and concrete garden statues .  A favorite is our French antique stone cavalry troughs. And here’s what recently happened to two of these beauties: as you may know, Eye of the Day delivers. And installs. Even solid stone troughs. Brent and his crew of two took both troughs (each weighing about 1000 pounds, measuring 7 feet long) to a mountainside home and maneuvered them down stairs, around corners, up stairs and into place.  The pictures tell the story.  Another happy customer.   Done.

Greek Terracotta from the West Coast to the East

Today Brent is hard at work at this particular location at Fifth Avenue and  East 45th St in Manhattan.  This new Tommy Bahama store will be open on November 17th and includes a restaurant and a bar!  Brent met the shipment of 28 of our Greek terracotta pots (custom finished, I might add) in New York City and unpacked and helped place them.  A sore back notwithstanding, Brent and the rest of us are proud and excited to have such a presence at such a great location in New York.  At Eye of the Day we find more and more of our clients throughout the country are coming to us through our website and we are shipping far beyond our California locations.
